Pittsburgh Takes Flight: Icelandair Expands Service Amidst Soaring Demand

Soaring Success: Icelandair Expands Seasonal Service in Response to High Demand in Pittsburgh

The thriving connection between Pittsburgh and Reykjavik has received a significant boost, demonstrating the growing strength of Pittsburgh as a global travel hub. Following an impressive inaugural year of service between Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and Keflavík International Airport (KEF) near Reykjavik, Icelandair is expanding its seasonal service for 2025.

An Early Start and Consistent Schedule

Starting April 17, 2025, travelers can once again take advantage of Icelandair’s direct flights between Pittsburgh and the captivating Icelandic capital. This marks a near month-long advancement compared to the initial launch in May 2024. Maintaining its convenient schedule, the airline will continue to offer four flights per week on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Strong Regional Support and Collaboration

The decision to expand this route underscores the robust travel demand from Pittsburgh and the surrounding region. This announcement followed a productive visit to Iceland by a delegation of regional leaders, including PIT CEO Christina Cassotis and Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato. The delegation engaged with key stakeholders in Iceland’s business, tourism, and government sectors, solidifying Pittsburgh’s commitment to growing global connectivity.

A Strategic Move for Pittsburgh’s Growth

County Executive Innamorato emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating, “One of the goals of the delegation was expanded service for the flight and I’m so pleased that our partners at Icelandair recognized the strength of the market in the Pittsburgh region and beyond.” She further highlighted the importance of showcasing the region’s achievements on the global stage to attract economic development opportunities.

Enhanced Connectivity to Europe and Beyond

PIT CEO Cassotis underlined the strategic value of this development for Pittsburgh, stating, “This demonstrates the strength of the Pittsburgh business market in Europe and shows airlines, including Icelandair, that this region is serious about growing business and leisure connections to Iceland, Europe, and beyond.”

A Resurgence of a Valuable Link

Icelandair’s service marks the return of nonstop flights between Pittsburgh and Iceland after a five-year gap. This vital connection was previously operated by WOW Air between 2017 and 2019. The current service utilizes Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft and is estimated to contribute an annual economic impact of $9 million to the region.

Gateway to Europe and Unique Travel Experiences

Beyond providing a convenient route to one of Europe’s most sought-after destinations, Icelandair’s hub at Keflavik International Airport opens doors to over 25 European destinations. The airline’s distinctive stopover program allows passengers to immerse themselves in Icelandic culture for up to seven days before continuing their journey, further enhancing the travel experience.

A Bright Future for Pittsburgh’s Global Connectivity

The expansion of Icelandair’s service, along with the recent announcement of British Airways’ upgrade to daily flights between Pittsburgh and London, paints a promising picture for Pittsburgh’s international connectivity. These developments solidify the region’s commitment to fostering global ties and attracting business and leisure travelers from around the world. As Pittsburgh continues to expand its reach, the possibilities for economic growth and cultural exchange are boundless.
